Finding what works best to keep one's hands warm for winter sports requires creative, even unconventional, thinking. I like the system you've worked out, Rhea. Although I haven't experimented with overmitts for winter nordic walking, what you've written has made me eager to do so when we have another winter with exceptionally cold weather in Seattle.

To find gloves for our usual fall and winter weather in the Pacific Northwest, I like to visit stores that sell equipment and clothing for scuba diving, or for kayaking and canoeing.

Warm water scuba diving gloves, and paddling gloves, are a joy to wear for nordic walking on cold, windy, wet days in the Pacific Northwest because they combine the close, comfortable fit of cross-country skiing gloves with the warmth of windproof, waterproof, neoprene wetsuit material. To find an example of this type of glove, try searching on these keywords: Waterfall, gloves, 2mm.

I believe Thorlo socks are the best sock available. My husband (then boyfriend) introduced them to me for jogging and tennis. At the time I thought they were expensive, but their value is not only the comfort level and wicking abilities, but the longevity of these socks. I have had some of my older ones for years and they still are resilient and comfortable. I recommend them fully here and by word of mouth!

It's amazing how many people automatically buy cotton socks and use them for all but the coldest weather -- and I confess to being one of them, until someone like you reminds me.... I have had excellent experiences with ThorLo and also with Smartwool for hiking and also for skiing and snowshoeing. I need to try those ThorLo summer socks too.

Hi Barb: The school is carpeted and it works great with the rubber paws. With smooth ceramic it is not the best situation. Some ceramic is textured and that works alright. What brand of rubber paws are you using? One tip I have is to wash off and dry your rubber paws to remove the debris before walking on ceramic. Try contacting your local mall (esp if it's carpeted) and see if they'll give u permission to NW there. Some larger schools have walking programs in the evenings and they may have either a rubberized track or carpeted one. If u have any more ?, please ask. Thanks, Rhea

Nordic walking in your school sounds great. Is the floor tile or carpeted? I'd love to use my poles indoors but find the floors are always too slippery...the rubber tips slide and don't grip. Would love to hear how you do it!
